Introduction to Poultry Processing

Learn to safely and humanely kill, pluck, clean, and gut your own poultry! Bring your own bird or purchase a bird from us. Skills learned will be applicable to chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese. Get hands-on experience processing your own bird to take home or just observe. Birds for purchase are subject to availability.

Join The Goose & Hen’s resident foraging expert, Kerry Evans, on a leisurely walk to learn about some of the many edible wild plants growing around us. Kerry is passionate about finding, eating, and cooking with wild edibles and enjoys sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Chances are you walk right by delicious, nutritious, and free food regularly without even knowing it! Because different plants are growing at different times of the year and in different locations, you can expect each class to be unique. Classes are appropriate for all ages, but if you would like to schedule a class specifically geared towards children, please contact us. We are happy make arrangements with your group. Location TBD. Participants will receive more information one week before the class, but all classes are held within a 30 min drive of Harvard, MA. Children under 5 are free with a paying parent or guardian.

Sourdough Bread: The Easy Way

Learn to make delicious, European-style sourdough bread with only a few simple ingredients and no kneading! We'll also discuss ways to incorporate sourdough starter into your other baked goods. Each participant will go home with an in-progress loaf plus additional sourdough starter and see various stages of bread production in class. We'll also get to sample some fresh bread.

Fermented Drinks

No more scheduled classes currently, but contact us if you are interested; we will add a class if there is enough interest.

Learn to make nutritious and delicious natural "sodas" and other beverages, including kombucha, water kefir, milk kefir, ginger bug, fruit shrub, and raw apple cider vinegar. We'll sample the various drinks, and participants will have the option to go home with starters for whichever drinks they plan to make.

Raising Rabbits for Meat

Saturday, June 15, 2:00-4:00 pm

Join us to learn how to successfully care for, breed, and process rabbits for meat. We'll discuss everything you need to know in order to raise rabbits to feed yourself and/or your family, from choosing a breed to housing to when and how to kill, skin, and clean the animals. We'll also briefly discuss tanning pelts. This is a hands-on class in rabbit processing, but not in tanning. Bring your own rabbit or purchase one from us.

Private Foraging Walks

Do you have a 4-H, homeschool, scout, senior, or other group that would be interested in a class geared specifically to them? As a homeschooling mom of 5 children, Kerry is experienced at making learning fun for children as well as adults. Contact us to schedule your private walk. Class size is limited to 15 people.
